Blackjack , also known as twenty-one , is a comparing card game between usually several players and a dealer, where each player in turn competes against the dealer, but players do not play against each other. It is played with one or more decks of 52 cards, and is the most widely played casino banking game in the world. Players are each dealt two cards, face up or down depending on the casino and the table at which you sit.
In most other countries, the dealer receives one card face up. The value of cards two through ten is their pip value 2 through Face cards Jack, Queen, and King are all worth ten. Aces can be worth one or eleven.
A hand's value is the sum of the card values. Players are allowed to draw additional cards to improve their hands. A hand with an ace valued as 11 is called "soft", meaning that the hand will not bust by taking an additional card; the value of the ace will become one to prevent the hand from exceeding Otherwise, the hand is "hard".
The dealer hand will not be completed if all players have either busted or received Blackjacks. The dealer then reveals the hidden card and must hit until the cards total 17 or more points.

The purpose of this article is to help players who are already counting cards to decide if they should use a fixed, altered version of blackjack basic strategy for their playing decisions, rather than varying their playing strategy by the count. One day in I started thinking about the different ways a player can gain an advantage over the casino through card counting:. Number 3 produces the greatest gain while requiring the greatest amount of effort. The "Top 16" indexes referred to in this article are the 16 most important basic strategy deviations in a shoe game to a card counter's win rate. For the count at which you deviate from basic strategy for the playing of these hands, see your card counting system.
Standard blackjack Basic Strategy ignores the bet spread that card counters use when the count indicates the deck has switched to a player advantage. The development of a Count Index Playing Strategy considers the count to determine when to deviate from Basic Strategy, but also ignores the bet spread.
What kind of strategy could be developed if the bet spread were taken into account? Let's consider a six-deck game, 16 v. The Basic Strategy decision is hit. My thought was what is the best way to play 16 v. If you are not going to deviate from Basic Strategy based on the count, does there exist a modified Basic Strategy that would improve your win rate?
In designing such a strategy, one thing I had to research was how sensitive the resulting set of modifications would be to variations in the bet spread and deck penetration? Things could get unwieldy quickly if there were substantial differences among Card Counting Basic Strategies as you used different bet spreads and factored in different levels of penetration.
When it comes to the number of decks in a blackjack game, the fewer the better. I often get this question by email, where players will note that the proportion of each rank of card is the same whether the casino uses a single deck or shuffles six decks together. Regardless of how many decks are in play, we start out with one thirteenth of the cards being Aces….
Despite the initial card proportions being equal, in games with fewer decks you will be dealt more blackjacks. You will also be more successful in your double downs. How can that be, when all the ranks are equally represented no matter how many decks are used? It is because removing cards has more impact in a game with fewer decks.
To get the probability of drawing a blackjack from a single deck, we multiply the chance of drawing an Ace by the chance of drawing a ten-value card. In a single deck of 52 cards there are 4 Aces and 16 ten-valued cards 4 each of Ten, Jack, Queen, and King. Note that the second line reduces the number of cards in the divisor to 51, to account for the removed Ace. We also need to double the result since we could draw either Ace,Ten or Ten,Ace.
Our final result is: Same idea with two decks, with different numbers. More decks means slightly fewer blackjacks. In six decks, the probability drops further yet to 4. The same effect impacts double downs. If you double your initial hand of 6,5 for a total of 11, then you are slightly more likely to draw a face card to make 21 if the game uses fewer decks.
Astute readers may notice that the dealer gets the benefit of these changes as well. But note that a player wins 3: And for hands like the double down example, the player wins twice the initial bet. So while both player and dealer get more of these good hands, the player is rewarded more handsomely for his. For the same reason, you will get fewer dealt hands of 20! Once you remove the first ten-value card, there are only 15 tens left in 51 cards in single deck, while in double deck your chances are better with 31 out of The bottom line is that, all other things being equal, you should play in games with fewer decks.
